In the UK you have the legal right to choose the person who provides your specialist NHS mental health examinations. But not all healthcare professionals are trained to recognize ADHD.
Panorama has heard from patients and whistleblowers who claim that private clinics diagnose ADHD and prescribe medication without proper checks. We went undercover to learn more.
What is an assessment of an initiative?
An assessment is a meeting with a psychiatrist to discuss the ways in which ADHD affects your life and determine whether medication could help. You'll need to bring details of your symptoms as well as any issues they are causing. You will also be asked about your family and work schedule. Private psychiatric services are faster and more professional, especially in London. The price ranges from PS600 up to PS1,200. Private psychiatrists are experienced in the assessment of adults from diverse backgrounds and offer an individual treatment plan, especially if you are highly skilled or have a lucrative career. They can also test for and offer help with any co-morbidities that are often associated with ADHD, like depression and anxiety.
The Psychiatrist examines your symptoms using the DSM V criteria and determines whether you meet the criteria of an ADHD diagnosis. You will have to show at least 6 characteristics (symptoms) that are present in your life today and how they have had an impact on your previous experiences.
The Psychiatrist will inform you of your options and the next steps. You may decide to begin treatment, which may involve stimulants such as methylphenidate. These stimulants fall under the Misuse of Drugs Act and are therefore controlled. They are prescribed by a psychiatrist or doctor registered with the General Medical Council.

You have the right to choose your mental health practitioner to conduct an ADHD assessment if you're an active military service. You'll need to ensure that your GP will accept full care or something called a 'shared care agreement' after your chosen provider discharges you and prescribes treatment (usually CBT therapy or medication). You will be asked about your symptoms, and the time they began when you GP refers you to an ADHD specialist through the Right to Choose path. This will help your doctor better understand your symptoms and their impact on your daily life. Answer these questions honestly and clearly.

Even if you are diagnosed using this pathway, you may still not be able access the medication that you require.
There are a number of alternatives to an ADHD diagnosis, including private clinics. You will also need to provide a letter from the healthcare provider proving this, along with the copy of your medical documents.
